Dr da Assunção qualified as a doctor in Johannesburg, South Africa and qualified as an Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon after training in the UK and Australia. He has been awarded Fellowships of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has logged over 7000 orthopaedic and surgical procedures and has extensive experience in reconstruction and replacement of the hip and knee as well as trauma surgery throughout the skeleton.
After being awarded FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 2008, he undertook the AO / OTA Trauma Fellowship at the world-renowned Harbourview Medical Centre in Seattle, USA. In 2009 he travelled to Sydney where he undertook a Lower Limb Reconstruction and Arthroplasty Fellowship with Professor Warwick Bruce, where he was trained in complex hip, knee, reconstruction and revision surgery. He also fell in love with Australia and his future wife! In 2010 Dr da Assunção undertook the Perth Trauma Fellowship at the Royal Perth Hospital where he gained further experience in major and complex Orthopaedic trauma. For 18 months over 2010 and 2011, he was a hip and knee Fellow at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, UK, an internationally recognised centre of excellence. He trained with Professor David Murray, Mr Christopher Dodd and other thought leaders in the field to become proficient in all aspects of lower limb reconstruction. This included expertise in partial knee replacement and complex primary and revision surgery of the hip and knee.
Dr da Assunção and his family moved back to Australia after 9 years of public and private practice in the South of England to re-unite his little kids with their Aussie family. He was subsequently awarded FRACS (Orth) and established Revolution Orthopaedics, a practice intended to provide a modern, holistic, tailored surgical service to patients with musculoskeletal problems or trauma. He has also collaborated with Dr Ganesh Balendra to create Tamworth Orthopaedic Group, a private practice dedicated to the people of Tamworth and the wider Hunter New England area. In addition to the standard spectrum of lower limb surgery, he has a special interest in knee preservation surgery and is a firm believer that shared decision making and evidence-based surgery lead to good results and happy patients.
Dr da Assunção lives in the Hills district of Sydney with his wife and daughters. He enjoys fishing, cooking, cinema and remains a die-hard Alfa Romeo enthusiast.
